Professional Broadcast Engineering | |
The broadcast industry is undergoing significant change. Recent FCC rulings, changes in many organizational structures, and increased competition have mandated investment in sophisticated technology to both achieve maximum efficiency and establish non-traditional revenue streams. The problem is how to accomplish that within existing personnel and budget restraints. PC based and digital technologies enable more efficient use of personnel resources, and when properly implemented can assure profitability. However, a new level of technical expertise is required to install, train personnel, and maintain such systems. Unfortunately, the pool of adequately trained engineers and technicians dedicated to broadcasting is being depleted, due both to attrition as personnel migrate to other more lucrative industries requiring the same or similar disciplines, and the associated increased demand on the remaining personnel being asked to maintain a greater number of stations. The result is that today’s resident engineer is often more of a manager and facilitator of solutions rather than the traditional hands on “able to fix everything” individual of that we have grown to rely on.
